The Butler family have been farming at Selborne for 76 years primarily farming hops for brewing and potatoes. The farm is now run along simpler lines growing wheat, oil seed rape, beans, millet and lavender and letting land for vegetable growing – baby spinach and coriander.
Their first diversification in 1989 was to make use of surplus farm buildings, having given up rearing cattle, renting out small workshop and office space known as the Hartley Park Business Centre.
Tim together with his son Simon have converted a barn on the farm as a secure storage facility using the Barn Store identity.
Tim and his wife Anne live on site, as does Simon. Anne runs the very successful English Hampshire Lavender Company distilling the oil from the lavender crop harvested in July and August and converted into their delightful fragrant soaps, oils and sprays which are sold through their shop on the farm as well as at local farmers’ markets. Drivers using the B3006 Liss to Alton road will be familiar with the wonderful sight of the lavender in bloom during June. See www.thelavenderfields.co.uk
Hops are still grown on the farm although no longer for the brewing industry but can be purchased from the farm or farmers’ markets during August and September. Perfect to decorate the farmhouse kitchen and can be found adorning pub beams throughout the area.
We are just outside Selborne village on the B3006 just 5 minutes from Alton off the A31 and 10 minutes from Liss off the A3.
