Family-Owned Storage with Farming Roots

A Family Farm Since 1954

The Blanchard family are now the third generation farming at New House Farm, Southmoor. The farm is run by James, his brother and their father, with Susan providing vital office support. James’s grandfather purchased the farm after serving in the Army and working in agricultural management.

From Hop Farm to Barn Store

New House Farm was once home to Oxfordshire’s only hop farm, and formerly Berkshire’s too. Hop growing was a key part of the farm for more than a century before coming to an end in 2013. Today, the former hop yard has found a new purpose as the home of Barn Store, complementing the farm’s core cereal and pig enterprises.

Committed to Conservation

Conservation has always been central to the Blanchard family’s approach to farming. They actively promote biodiversity through habitat creation, careful hedgerow and watercourse management, and stewardship of the local floodplain.

In recent years, the family has planted more than 6,000 trees across two new woodlands and established approximately 1 kilometre of new hedgerows, helping to create valuable habitats for wildlife and enhance the local landscape.

Renewable Energy and Sustainability

Sustainability plays an important role at New House Farm. The farm operates a 200kW biomass boiler alongside 100kW of solar photovoltaic panels, providing renewable heat and electricity across the site.

The biomass boiler is fuelled using locally sourced timber thinnings and recycled wood, helping to reduce waste and support a more sustainable farming operation.

Farming Today

Alongside Barn Store, New House Farm remains a busy working farm. Each year, the family grows wheat for milling, barley for malting and oilseed rape for cooking oil.

The farm also breeds and finishes pigs on site, marketing them through a cooperative that supplies supermarkets and food processors across the country.

James started farming in 2013 after working with Strutt & Parker managing farms and estates. A graduate of the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester, he holds degrees in Agriculture (BSc) and Rural Estate Management (MSc), along with advanced training in agricultural business and leadership.

He oversees the business, focusing on management, investment, and new opportunities. James also sits on the steering group of the Ock Farmer Cluster, which secured a £750,000 grant to support environmental services and carbon capture in the River Ock catchment.

James spent 20 years in management roles across the veterinary and pet insurance industries before joining Blanchard Farms in December 2023 to pursue his long-held interest in farming. Drawing on his commercial background, he oversees finance, cashflow, management accounts, lettings, and the self-storage side of the business.

A local resident for over 25 years, James now enjoys life without the daily London commute.
