Meet the team at Barn-Store Alton

For almost 100 years the Butler family has been farming in Selborne, initially focused on hops for brewing and potatoes. Today, the farm has streamlined operations, cultivating wheat, oilseed rape, beans, hops and lavender, while leasing land for vegetable growing.

Their journey in diversification began in 1989, repurposing surplus farm buildings after ceasing cattle rearing to create the Hartley Park Business Centre, offering small workshop and office spaces. Simon converted one of the farms barns into a secure storage facility under the Barn-Store brand. Meanwhile, Nick and his wife, Lyndsay reside on site, along with Simon. Nick and Lyndsay own and run The Lavender Fields, transforming the lavender harvest into fragrant soaps, oils and sprays available at their gift and coffee shop. The lavender blooms are a stunning sight along the B3006 Liss to Alton road from June to August.

The Butler family have always been interested in looking after the wildlife and environment on the farm and are part of the HMS and SFI environment schemes which cover wild birds, fallow plots, nectar and pollen areas and wildflower meadows. The farm is also keen to reduce its carbon footprint and the main barn now has solar panels to help reduce this.

We have two charities on the farm, CCLL (Helping Hand for Ukraine) – www.ccll.org.uk and Dogs for Autism – www.dogsforautism.org.uk who both do amazing work.

Dogs for Autism and The Lavender fields were honoured to have a visit in January 2025 from Her

Royal Highness, The Duchess of Edinburgh.
