The Blanchard family are now the third generation farming at New House Farm, Southmoor. The farm is run by James, his brother, and their father, with Susan providing vital office support. James’s grandfather purchased the farm after serving in the Army and working in agricultural management. Once home to Oxfordshire’s only hop farm (formerly Berkshire’s too), hop growing came to an end in 2013 after more than a century. Today, the former hop yard houses the Barn Store, complementing the farm’s core cereal and pig enterprises.
Conservation has always been central to the Blanchards’ approach. They actively promote biodiversity through habitat creation, hedgerow and watercourse management, and floodplain stewardship. In recent years, they have planted over 6,000 trees across two new woodlands and added around 1 km of hedgerows.
Renewable energy also plays an important role, with a 200kW biomass boiler and 100kW of solar PV panels supplying sustainable heat and electricity across the farm. The biomass boiler is fuelled by locally sourced timber thinnings and recycled wood.
Each year the farm grows wheat for milling, barley for malting, and oilseed rape for cooking oil, while pigs are bred and finished on site and marketed through a cooperative supplying supermarkets and processors.

James started farming in 2013 after working with Strutt & Parker managing farms and estates. A graduate of the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester, he holds degrees in Agriculture (BSc) and Rural Estate Management (MSc), along with advanced training in agricultural business and leadership.
He oversees the business, focusing on management, investment, and new opportunities. James also sits on the steering group of the Ock Farmer Cluster, which secured a £750,000 grant to support environmental services and carbon capture in the River Ock catchment.

James spent 20 years in management roles across the veterinary and pet insurance industries before joining Blanchard Farms in December 2023 to pursue his long-held interest in farming. Drawing on his commercial background, he oversees finance, cashflow, management accounts, lettings, and the self-storage side of the business.
A local resident for over 25 years, James now enjoys life without the daily London commute.
