Rooted in Thame: The Gurney Family at North Weston Farm

Three generations of farming, conservation and innovation, creating secure local self storage while protecting the countryside for the future.

thame

The Gurney family, third-generation farmers at North Weston Farm, have cultivated a rich history in dairy, beef, and arable farming. In 2013, they made a significant shift: they transformed their former dairy and milking parlour into a Barn Store, a self-storage facility serving Thame and the surrounding community. This venture diversified their operations and provided a new local resource while allowing them to continue their primary focus on beef and cereal production.

North Weston Farm produces wheat for both milling and animal feed, oilseed rape for cooking oils, and maize as livestock feed. The farm is fortunate to have the River Thame flowing through its property, along with adjacent flood meadows, which offer prime grazing grounds for cattle and sheep. This picturesque landscape supports a thriving agricultural operation that embraces both tradition and innovation. Beyond farming, the Gurney family is deeply committed to environmental conservation. They have been recognized with numerous environmental awards and are currently part of an Environmental Higher Tier Scheme, which promotes biodiversity across their land. Their efforts include supporting pollinators, native birds, and diverse flora.

The farm is especially proud to host one of the highest concentrations of breeding Curlew and Lapwing in the region, a testament to their dedication to wildlife preservation. In response to the loss of Elm trees from Dutch Elm Disease in the 1970s, the Gurneys have planted new woodlands, established shelter belts, and restored over two kilometers of hedgerows in recent years. These efforts contribute to a healthier ecosystem, benefiting the local environment and future generations.

The Barn Store self-storage facility in Thame stands as a testament to the Gurneys' hard work, resourcefulness, and commitment to both farming and conservation, all of which are made possible by a dedicated family team.
