In April 2007, Holden Farm in Cheriton, near Winchester, embarked on a new venture by joining the Barn-Store franchise. This historic farm, lovingly managed by Charlie and Susie Corbett, has been in the Corbett family since 1911. As the third-generation custodians, they blend tradition with innovation in their stewardship of the land.

The farm’s evolution mirrors the broader shifts in British agriculture. Once a diverse operation with arable farming, a dairy herd, and a sheep flock, Holden Farm has adapted to modern agricultural trends. Arable farming is now managed by a neighboring contractor, the dairy herd has been dispersed, and a new horse enterprise adds a fresh dimension to farm life.

Central to Holden Farm’s philosophy is a strong commitment to conservation. Charlie and Susie have implemented various schemes to enrich the landscape and boost biodiversity. They have planted and coppiced over three miles of hedgerows, and established grass margins around their arable fields, resulting in a notable increase in songbird numbers.

One of their standout projects has been the transformation of Lane End Down into an organically managed downland. Over the past eight years, this area has blossomed with over 20 types of wildflowers, attracting wildlife such as Chalk Hill Blue Butterflies, first sighted there in 2010.

The South Downs Way runs through the farm, offering visitors an opportunity to appreciate these conservation efforts firsthand. Additionally, Charlie and Susie are proud members of the Winchester Downs Cluster, a group focused on regenerative farming and habitat improvement.
